Water Is Life. Climate Resilience Is Survival.

When the rains fail, harvests collapse and livestock starve. We help communities in The Gambia secure water for their crops, their animals, and their families.

The Crisis

Erratic Rainfall Is Breaking the Cycle of Life

In The Gambia's Upper River Region, farming and herding families depend almost entirely on the rains. But the rains are increasingly unreliable, arriving late, stopping early, or failing altogether.

When they fail, groundnut yields collapse and the main source of income disappears. Maize fields dry out before harvest, cutting the food a family grows for itself.

And with no surface water and no grass, cattle and small livestock become malnourished and die, wiping out a household's savings and safety net in a single dry season. Women and children are hit hardest.

Our Response: WellSpring

Sustainable Water for Crops, Herds & Families

WellSpring tackles the root cause: total dependence on a single, failing water source. We deliver climate-resilient water supply so that both crops and animals can survive the dry spells.

It is a solar-powered, low-emission solution designed with the community to last, building local ownership so it keeps running long after the project ends.

  • Solar-powered boreholes & storage for reliable, year-round water
  • Efficient drip irrigation to protect groundnut and maize harvests
  • Livestock watering points & fodder storage to keep animals alive through the dry season
  • Women-led gardens & youth training for steadier income and local skills
Proven in the Field

Completed

In Maka Masireh Village, we helped a farming community whose entire livelihood depends on their harvest and their animals. When water is scarce, both are at risk.

By installing a solar-powered borehole, we delivered a reliable, clean water supply that sustains their crops and their livestock (cattle, sheep and more), all without harming the climate.

It is a working example of what WellSpring aims to scale across the Upper River Region.

The Approach

One Integrated Solution

Water, crops and livestock are addressed together, so a gain in one is not undone by a failing link in another.

☀️

Reliable Water

Solar-powered boreholes and storage give households, gardens and livestock a dependable water source, with no diesel and low running cost.

🌱

Resilient Farming

Efficient irrigation and drought-tolerant varieties keep groundnut and maize productive through dry spells, protecting food and income.

🐄

Healthy Herds

Dedicated watering points and stored fodder keep cattle and small livestock fed and watered when grazing fails, safeguarding a family's savings.

Proven in Maka Masireh, ready to scale. Building on what we have already delivered, WellSpring aims to bring this integrated water, farming and livestock model to more rain-dependent communities across the Upper River Region, as a measurable, scalable programme. We are seeking funding and partners to grow it.

Planned Next Phase

Smart WellSpring

As we scale, we plan to add a lightweight layer of sensors and AI-assisted advice, all designed as low-cost, low-power, solar-compatible technology with offline and SMS fallback, so it stays maintainable by the community.

📡

Water & Soil Sensors

Soil-moisture, tank-level and pump-flow sensors so irrigation runs only when needed, and low water or pump faults are flagged early.

🛰️

Drought Early Warning

Satellite and forecast data to give communities advance notice of dry spells, so they can time planting, water storage and fodder.

🤖

AI Irrigation Advice

Simple SMS or app guidance that combines soil-moisture readings with local weather to advise farmers when and how much to water.

🐐

AI for Animal Health

An app where herders log or photograph symptoms; AI triage flags likely disease or malnutrition early and prompts vaccination or vet contact.

☀️

Solar-Pump Telemetry

Remote monitoring of pump output and uptime, so a fault is caught before a community loses its water supply.

📊

Evidence That Scales

The same data becomes verified evidence of water delivered, yields protected and livestock health, making the programme measurable and investable.

Smart WellSpring is a planned enhancement we are seeking funding and partners to pilot. It builds on the proven core of reliable water, irrigation and livestock support, it does not replace it.

Help Communities Weather the Dry Season

Your support and partnership can bring sustainable water to farming and herding families facing a changing climate. Together, we can turn erratic rainfall from a catastrophe into something communities can withstand.
